What the Research Shows
- Multiple studies (including work from the range-of-motion literature) show that full range of motion generally beats partial range for hypertrophy.
- When partials are used, lengthened partials (reps performed in the stretched portion) tend to outperform shortened partials.
- The stretched position appears to create high mechanical tension across the muscle, a key hypertrophic stimulus.
How to Apply It
Pick exercises that load the stretch
Movements that challenge the muscle when it's long: deep Romanian deadlifts (hamstrings), overhead triceps extensions, incline dumbbell curls (long head of biceps), deep squats (quads/glutes), and dumbbell chest flies.
Control the eccentric
Lower under control and reach a full, deliberate stretch each rep rather than cutting the range short. Emphasize a 2–3 second lowering phase.
The Nuance
This is a refinement, not a replacement for the fundamentals. Volume, intensity, and progressive overload still matter most — exploit the stretch within a solid program.
Coach's Note
Don't chase stretch at the cost of control. A deep, controlled rep beats a bouncy, uncontrolled one every time.
