Autoregulation and RPE: Training by Feel, Backed by Data

Fixed percentage-based programs assume you feel the same every day. You don't. Autoregulation adjusts training load based on daily readiness, using tools like RPE and reps-in-reserve.

RPE and RIR Explained

The modern lifting RPE scale (Zourdos et al., 2016) maps effort to reps in reserve (RIR):

  • RPE 10 — 0 RIR, absolute failure.
  • RPE 9 — 1 rep left.
  • RPE 8 — 2 reps left.
  • RPE 7 — 3 reps left.

Most hypertrophy work is best done around RPE 7–9 — close enough to failure to drive growth, far enough to manage fatigue and technique.

Why It Works

On a well-recovered day, RPE 8 might be 185 lbs; on a poorly-slept day, it might be 170 lbs. Autoregulation keeps the stimulus constant while the absolute load flexes with your readiness. This prevents both under-training on good days and grinding through junk volume (or injury) on bad ones.

How to Start

Assign target RPE ranges instead of rigid weights: "3 sets of 8 at RPE 8." Pick a load that leaves ~2 reps in the tank on the final set. Adjust up or down as needed that day.

The Learning Curve

Beginners underestimate proximity to failure — they stop with 5+ reps left thinking they're near their limit. Video your sets and occasionally train to true failure to calibrate. Accuracy improves quickly with practice.

Coach's Note

Log your RPE alongside weights. Over time you will calibrate it accurately, and it becomes one of the most powerful tools for long-term progress.
